Title III: Instruction of Recruits

Article 5. Inspection of Arms

The Instructor must pay attention to the following elements when demonstrating the manual of arms.

Demonstrate each movement he is teaching to match action with verbal explanation.

As soon as the recruits know the movements of a step, the instructor should demonstrate all the movements of the step in front of them with pausing on the movements if they have carried it out well. Ensure that the solders maintain their heads and body in position . Encourage the speed in execution, distinct pauses to each step or movement and precision in each position. Pay attention that the only the arms move and that the musket always passes as close to the body as possible. Each man should be trained to fire in all three ranks.

Pay particular attention to demonstrate each step in the prescribed sequence.

As soon as the recruit knows the mechanics of loading the musket, he will habitually carry six "sand and ball" cartridges in his cartridge box, so that he becomes accustomed to taking the cartridge from the cartridge box, tear it and prime, pour powder down the barrel, insert paper, the ball and ram. Drill will consist equally of drill by the numbers and loading at will described in Article 6. Each recruit will be drilled until he is able to load and fire at will three times and have a fourth load in the barrel and the weapon at the shoulder in one minute.

Place the cartridges in the cartridge box upside down with the ball on top so that the Soldier can take them and bring them to his mouth without having to turn them over in his hand.

The weapons will be discharged each day in the presence of the non-commissioned officers of the Chambrée who will collect the balls , the NCO in charge of the recruits will count off the balls as they are collected and count them out the Sergeant Major.
