Article 4: Load in 12 Steps

Unit Instructions: When firing blanks for demonstrations, the paper cartridge will not be placed in the barrel, powder only, and the ramrod (Temps 9, 10 & 11) will not be used. At times when demonstrating the drill, the ramrod will be merely raised and lowered in the thimbles and not placed in the barrel; as is customary with the particular organization we are under the command of at the time.

Do a demi-à-droite on the left heel, place the right foot sqaure behind the left heel, the buckle touching the heel; at the same time turn the lock up with the left hand, seize the wrist with the right hand, holding the musket upright and away from the shoulder, the left hand loose on the butt.

 

2nd

With the right hand lower the weapon into the left which comes up at the same time to grasp the weapon at the capucine, the thumb straight along the stock, the butt under the right arm, the muzzle at eye level, the trigger guard a bit forward, the left elbow close to the side; the thumb laid against the frizzen above the cock, the four fingers around the wrist and the forearm along the stock

2. Ouvrez - Bassinet

Open the pan by pushing strongly with the right thumb, draw back the elbow bringing the right hand to the cartridge box., passing the hand between the stock and the body, and open the cartridge box.

Tear the cartridge to the powder, hold the cartridge near the tear with the thumb and two fingers, lower it immediately and place it horizontally over the pan, the top of the hand in the air and the elbow touching the butt.

Lower the head, bring the eye over the pan, fill it with powder; regrip the cartridge near the tear with the thumb and two fingers, raise the head, bring the right hand behind the frizzen touching it with the bottom two fingers.

Strongly close the frizzen with bottom two fingers. Always keeping the cartridge in the first two fingers, immediately seize the wrist of the musket with the palm and bottom two fingers of the right hand; the thumb to the body and the elbow back and a bit out from the body.

Put the musket upright by strongly extending the right arm to its full length, at the same time turning the ramrod to the shoulder; slide the left hand to the second capucine, the hammer resting on the right thumb and at the same time doing a face en tête, bring the right foot farward, the heel against and touching the buckle of the left foot.

 

2nd

Then release the musket with the right hand and lower the musket near the body, fully extending the left arm. At the same time, bring the right hand to the level and one inch from the muzzle; put the butt on the ground without striking; the left hand held below the bottom button of the vest, the arm touching the left thigh. The muzzle opposite and 8 inches from the crease of the right shoulder.

Turn the right hand quickly to seize the ramrod near the muzzle with the tips of the fingers and the thumb. Complete the draw in the same direciton extending the fingers toward the thick end and extending the arm to full length.

 

2nd

Keeping the arm straight, turn the ramrod between the face and the bayonet. Put the thick end into the barrel up to the hand holding the ramrod.

10. Bourrez

Fully extend the right arm seizing the end of the ramrod, force it down the barrel, and regrip the thin end between the thumb and first finger.

11. Remettez == la baguette

Swiftly push the ramrod from the barrel and lower the right hand to the muzzle, thumb down, elbow at the level of the hand, complete the draw with the fingers extended toward the thin end and the arm kept straight.

 

2nd

Turn it as described in the 9th Temps, bringing the thin end to the thimbles and immediately press in the rest; placing the hand slightly bend over the thick end.

12. Portez == vos Armes

Raise the musket along the body with the left hand, the little finger at eye level, the barrel to the front. Lower the right hand to take the musket at the wrist.

 

2nd

Raise the musket with the right hand, then release it with the left and bring the left hand under the butt. Draw the right foot to the side of the left and aligned with it. Press the musket with the right hand against the left shoulder in the position indicated for porte armes with the right hand touching the wrist without grasping it.

 

3rd

Lower the right hand lively to the right side.

Make ready arms is done on one command in two movements and demonstrated separately to each of the three ranks.

FIRING DRILL

EXPERIENCE has shown that the three ranks will fire standing in time of war and it is His Majesty's intention not to prevent this from being done before the enemy. He orders that in firing, the first rank will not put their knees on the ground and that the three ranks will fire standing at the same time.

The screwplate turned nearly toward the body the ramrod toward the front of the regiment.; at the same time place the right thumb at the head of the cock, the forefinger below and against the trigger guard, the other three fingers against the first; bring the right elbow closer to the body while bringing the lock to full cock and grasping the musket at the wrist.

The same as the first movement of the first row except that the right foot is brought six inches from the left and aligned to it.

While drawing back the musket, the third row will draw back the right foot 8 inches to the rear of its alignment in the rank, the left foot following to retake its position in the Charge.

Draw back the hammer to half-cock; bring the right hand to the cartridge box passing between the body and the butt and open the box.


If after having fired, one no longer wishes to charger == les armes, one will command portez==vos armes immediately after firing. The soldier will bring the hammer to half-cock, close the pan, & will shoulder arms. This sequence need not be hurried but should be done lively.

The soldiers in the third row, whether they have loaded or not, shall realign the third rank but they will continue to lean to the side and will not realign themselves with the front man in their file until the end of the drum roll that marks the cease fire.

In small unit drills or those in which there is no drummer, the drum role will be indicated by the command roulement which will be followed almost immediately by the command fin de roulement which will not be given until the moment when the arms will be shouldered.

Complete turning the musket with the right hand brining it upright and opposite the left eye., the cock at the level of the bottom vest button, the right hand gripping the wrist below the trigger guard; at the same time briskly grip the musket with the left hand placing the little finger against the frizzen spring, the thumb straight along the stock, the forearm close to the body without being strained; the soldier remains face en tête without moving the feet.
